Marzia Varvaglione: a recognition of my father's work
Primitivo di Manduria Old Vines 2017 – 1st Best Italian Red Wine 2021 by Luca Maroni
For the yearbook The Best Italian Wines 2021 by Luca Maroni, the Cosimo Varvaglione Private Collection Primitivo di Manduria Old Vines 2017 was awarded 1st Best Red Wine.
It is a further commendation for one of the flagship wines of the Varvaglione family, which, especially in the Private Collection, fully expresses the identity of the owner and winemaker Cosimo Varvaglione.
The two wines from the Private Collection—namely the Primitivo di Manduria and the Negroamaro—are signed by Cosimo Varvaglione who, together with the young winemaker Nicola Baldari, performs a special act of love. They are the result of the right balance between man and nature, and the outcome is unique and unrepeatable vintages.
For the https://www.varvaglione.com/primitivo-di-manduria-dop/ as well as for the Negroamaro, after careful selection and pruning, the grapes are hand-harvested at night; the weather conditions allow for a very high-quality harvest and a niche production. A portion of the grapes is left to wither. The wine then ages for fourteen months in wood. Due to the special care, these exceptional wines are entrusted to the winemaker and owner of the family business: https://www.varvaglione.com/cosimo-varvaglione-negroamaro.
«The Private Collection,» says Marzia Varvaglione, «is as if my father were opening his heart a little to the outside world, as if he were opening a window onto his way of conceiving viticulture. The Primitivo and the Negroamaro that are part of this extraordinary collection are his personal tribute to the teachings received from his predecessors and passed down to us, his children. It is a production style, but even more so a lifestyle that represents our company and our family around the world.»
